#1 gradlecast – getting started with gradle

By breskeby | October 27, 2010

A week ago someone asked me on twitter about any available screencasts about gradle (http://www.gradle.org). As far as I know there were no screencasts available yet. So, I’ve started to create one. This is my first screencast about gradle (a GradleCast). I hope you enjoy it and be pleasant about my english skills.

This screencast is done with gradle 0.9-rc1. feedback, comments, linking, voting and flattering are (as always) appreciated.

let me know about gradle related topics you want to see in another gradle screencast.
regards,
René

Nice screencast. I really liked it and would love to see more detail, especially about local (ie non-Maven) repositories.

I used Gradle for my last project’s build system but I think I skipped most of Gradle’s special features for Java and ended up just writing a series of Ant-like scripts in it. It worked and was much nicer to write than Ant, so it wasn’t all wasted but I’m certain it could be done better. It was a multi-project build too, so not incredibly simple.

Thanks and keep up the great work.

Great job! I like that you’ve kept things so simple. No “going out on a limb, showing everything at once”, just a quick demo of a very basic script for building and testing java code.

I’d probably add a comment at the end about the sample-scripts that are available in the Gradle dist, that would give people a place to look for further inspiration.

It’s a very good format and could probably be used to introduce other features of Gradle as well.

This was really well done. It’s a fantastic intro to the power of gradle, and I’ve forwarded it to my team members.

Really straightforward and simple. Like Tom, I’ve forwarded it on to a number of devs that I work with. Thanks for taking the time to put this together.

    Very nice screencast!

One minor thing: the resolution of the gradlecast is not high enough to watch it fulll screen on a 17″ MacBook Pro.

Thanks for all your feedback. Since my macbook is only 15″ fullscreen on 17″ is a bit difficult.

    regards,
    René

Looking forward for more screencasts. How about walking through an existing ant based project and migrate it to gradle.

would be great to have a detailed screencast about gradle rich object model. I’ve seen two presentation by Hans Docker, he flies through the object model so fast, that it is really hard to follow.

good start, but i would like to see more – better cover the most common development seniors, like the cases described in the book (Ant in Actin) – web application, big project/multiple modules, dependency management, how to extend gradle, etc. that is the way to judge whether gradle is good or not. HelloWorld example is not really attractive to season developers.
